LITTLE BIT MORE
LITTLE BIT MORE
One of the little known landmarks of the area around WAVE Resort is Pomorie Lake and the salt pans. Nestled between the beach and the meadows to the west, the lake and the salt pans arouse our curiosity and we decide to find out more about them and why they are a protected natural area.
Lake Pomorie is a natural ultra-saline lagoon (over twice as high as that of the Black Sea) located between Pomorie and WAVE Resort. In the past, Pomorie was an island that was connected to the mainland by the formation of two sandy slopes - to the west and to the north. Today the lake is separated from the sea by the northern sandy slope, which is about 5 km long and 50 m wide. Along this sandy strip sand dunes have been formed, covered with specific vegetation. Of interest is the "black" sand from which this sandy beach is made, and its color is due to the high content of iron oxides.
The area is one of the few remaining quiet and peaceful places on our coast, where you can hear the wind, watch the birds and enjoy the sand, the waves and the sun. The salt pans and Lake Pomorie have been protected since 2001. Their unique characteristics make them irresistibly attractive to over 268 species of birds (nesting, migrating, wintering). Some of them are endangered species. Many of them fly every year on the second largest bird migration route in Europe "Via Pontica". Storks, pelicans, geese and birds of prey cross the lake on their way from Europe to Africa and back. Lake Pomorie ranks third among the lakes on our Black Sea coast in the total number of all bird species. It is they who must be protected and preserved.
Shortly after Bourgas, just a few kilometers south, is the Poda Protected Area, where an observation center has been built for the incredible diversity of birds that visit this area. And the reason they like it so much is that the salt pans and the lakes around Bourgas, create great opportunities for them to feed on delicious organisms that live around and in the pools.
The same birds also visit Pomorie lake.
Isn't it great to know that just a few meters from your luxurious WAVE Resort room, there is a whole flock of rare bird species that have just flown in from Africa or are planning a trip back south.
The salt pans are part of Lake Pomorie. Salt is still collected here by traditional technology, at the end of each summer. It is collected manually after the shallow sea water has evaporated. This is a technology used for thousands of years. The high salinity of the lake waters in combination with the warm climate since ancient times have been a prerequisite for the development of salt production by evaporation. Although modern industrial production provides in abundance, in the past - salt was a rarity. That is why, in some places, it had the value of gold. Now the salt pans are more of an attraction.
However, 32-34 thousand tons per season are harvested here annually. In addition to salt, medicinal lye and mud are extracted here, which we use with pleasure and gratitude for spa procedures at our W SPA zone in WAVE Resort. The healing mud rich in microelements and microorganisms is deposited at the bottom of Pomorie Lake. It turns out that the Pomorie mud is estuarine and is different from that in other mud healing sites in the world. The unique thing is the specific chemical composition, high content of sulfur and iron.
Mud therapy has a long tradition in Pomorie, as the main applications are in skin issues and health issues of the musculoskeletal system, but also in cosmetics as a means of revitalization and refreshment of the skin.
While you are visiting our W Spa at WAVE Resort, you can enjoy a massage or treatment with mud or relax in our salt hydromassage pool, which is pleasantly warm.
And while you are our guest at WAVE Resort, we also invite you to visit the Museum of the salt in Pomorie. It has a rich collection of photographs from the early twentieth century and copies of documents from the period XV - XIX centuries, which tell about the production and trade of salt. In addition, authentic tools and equipment such as wooden carts, oars and other tools can be examined up close. And in the open - restored part of the narrow-gauge line for salt transportation, adds the museum exposition. Museum salt pans still produce salt today using the authentic "Anhial" technology, which has been practiced for more than 25 centuries.
